Background: PRECEDENT WAS SHATTERED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN A LAYWOMAN ADDRESSED THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY. SHE WAS MRS. JEAN SHIELDS, AN AMERICAN MEMBER OF A DELEGATION OF ROMAN CATHOLIC LAY REPRESENTATIVES WHO APPEARED BEFORE THE SYNOD YESTERDAY TO ASK FOR A MORE ACTIVE AND RESPONSIBLE ROLE FOR THE LAITY IN CHURCH LIFE.

THE DELEGATION WAS MADE UP BY FOURTEEN MEMBERS OF THE CURRENT WORLD CONGRESS OF THE LAITY. LED BY CONGRESS PRESIDENT DR. VITTORIO VERSNESE, THEY WERE RECEIVED BY THE SYNOD AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAILY DEBATE.

THEY PRESENTED A ONE-PAGE MEMORANDUM ASKING FOR REPRESENTATION AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE CHURCH ORGANISATION IN ORDER TO START A DIALOGUE BETWEEN LAYMEN AND THE CHURCH HIERARCHY.

THE MEMORANDUM WAS MUCH MILDER IN TONE THAN ITS ORIGINAL DRAFT WHICH DEMANDED A ROLE FOR THE LAITY IN "THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES OF CHURCH GOVERNMENT."
THE FINAL VERSION WAS AGREED AFTER CONGRESS MEMBERS WERE WARNED BY POPE PAUL ON SUNDAY (15 OCTOBER) THAT THEY SHOULD NOT EXPECT ANY INDEPENDENCE FROM THE CHURCH AUTHORITIES. HE FLATLY REJECTED ANY IDEA OF TWO SEPARATE HIERARCHIES, ONE LAY AND ONE CLERICAL.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE BISHOPS, WHO YESTERDAY DISCUSSED MARRIAGES OF MIXED RELIGIONS, REPLIED THAT THE SYNOD WAS AWARE OF THE LAITY'S VITAL AND INDISPENSABLE ROLE IN THE CHURCH BUT DID NOT ANSWER THE DELEGATION'S REQUEST SPECIFICALLY.
