TRANSCRIPT: MR. ISMAIL: "General Dayan, as usual the 'Hitler' of modern times, claimed that Damascus would fall after 24 hours. We shall see. Damascus will fall when not one single Syrian is left. They must all know it and remember it. Thank you Mr. President."

    SEQ. 6: DR. EL-ZAYYAT:

"The responsibility for all that's happening now, for every life lost, is on those who were so convinced that they have the power to occupy and to punish without any reaction. The responsibility lays in the manner by which you were told jokes from (indistinct) in answer to my pleading with the Council, and what do I tell my people?"

Background: The Israeli Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, was referred to as "our present-day Hitler" in the Security Council on Friday (12th October). These strong words came from the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Mohamed Zakaria Ismail. He accused Israeli planes of using napalm, and said they'd scattered delayed action bombs over the poorer suburbs of Damascus.

Speaking moments after receiving reports of the bombings, Mr. Ismail rejected claims that Damascus would fall within 24-hours. This would happen, he said, "only if a single Syrian is not left alive".

Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed El-Zayyat, also addressed the Security Council on Friday. He said Egypt refused to be dictated to. "We refuse", he said, "to be subjugated by long occupation, and we simply refuse to stay occupied". Dr. El-Zayyat said his country would resist occupation, not "because we guarantee success, but because we have no other option".
