    Background: SIX SOUTH VIETNAMESE OFFICIALS, KILLED IN AN ACCIDENTAL EXPLOSION IN SAIGON ON SUNDAY (JUNE 2) WERE POSTHUMOUSLY DECORATED ON WEDNESDAY (JUNE 5). THE PRESENTATION WAS MADE AT A SPECIAL CEREMONY AT SAIGON POLICE HEADQUARTERS BY PRIME MINISTER TRAN VAN HUONG AND DEFENCE MINISTER, GENERAL NGUYEN VAN VY.

    THE SIX OFFICIALS WERE KILLED WHEN A U.S. ROCKET MALFUNCTIONED AND LANDED ON THEIR COMMAND HEADQUARTERS IN CHOLON, FROM WHERE THEY WERE DIRECTING OPERATIONS AGAINST VIET CONG INFILTRATORS. THE OFFICIALS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN STANDING ON THE STEPS OF THE COMMAND POST WHEN THE ROCKET STRUCK.

    AMERICAN VIETNAM COMMANDER, CREIGHTON ABRAMS, AND THE ASSISTANT AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, SAMUEL BERGER, PERSONALLY APOLOGISED TO PRESIDENT NGUYEN VAN THIEU AND VICE-PRESIDENT NGUYEN CAO KY FOR THE ACCIDENT.

    COMMANDER ABRAMS WAS AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY TO HONOUR THE DEAD MEN.

    THE SIX OFFICIALS WERE: LIEUTENANT-COLONELS NGUYEN VAN LUAN, DIRECTOR OF SAIGON'S POLICE; LE NGOC TRU, POLICE CHIEF OF CHOLON; DAO BA PHUOC, COMMANDER OF THE FIFTH RANGER TASK FORCE; PHO QUOC TRU, DIRECTOR OF SAIGON PORT; AND MAJORS NGUYEN BAO THUY, ASSISTANT TO THE MAYOR OF SAIGON AND NGUYEN VAN XINH, ASSISTANT TO LIEUTENANT-COLONEL LUAN.

    SAIGON'S TOUGH MAYOR, COLONEL VAN VAN CUA, AND TWO OTHER OFFICERS WERE INJURED IN THE BLAST.
