Background: INTRODUCTION: Warning of a new arms race between India and Pakistan was given on Thursday (2 April) by India's External Affairs Minister, Mr. P.V. Narasimba Rao. He told the Indian Parliament he hoped that relations with Pakistan would improve but he felt the prospects were dim. He said United States offers of arms to Islamabad were contributing to the problem.
SYNOPSIS: In New Delhi, the Defence Ministry Building was the scene of a meeting between India's Prime Minster, Mrs Indira Gandhi, and senior commanders of the Indian Army. The aim of the conference was to discuss the military situation around India and in the Indian Ocean area. Mrs Gandhi was introduced to the commanders by General Malhotra, Chief of the Army Staff.
Mrs Gandhi placed details of the political situation in countries neighbouring India before the commanders, including General Krishna Rao, who is to become India's Army Chief of Staff from the first of June.
India has already protested to the United States about its planned injection of fresh arms aid to Pakistan. Mrs Gandhi called on the commanders to ensure India's security in the face of the threats facing the nation.
