Background: Three more people were killed in clashes between supporters of rival candidates in Bangladesh's rural council elections on December 29, bringing the death toll in election violence to six. As the polls -- due to take place over two weeks -- entered their fourth day, on December 30, the number of injured rose to 200. Voting at 86 of the country's 150 polling centres was suspended, officials said. The latest deaths occurred at a polling station on the outskirts of Dhaka. At some centres, police opened fire to disperse crowds who snatched away ballot boxes and assaulted polling officers. Military ruler Hossain Mohammad Ershad has chimed the elections to the 4,400 rural councils, the lowest tier of administration, will lay the foundations for a return to democracy.
