    Background: VISNEWS filmed Apr 18 Dato Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaya, and Dr. Djuanda, the Indonesian Prime Minister, signing a Treaty of Friendship in the Legislative Council Chambers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaya.

    The pact was witnessed for Malaya by Foreign Minister Dr. Ismail; Mr. Inche Senu, Malayan Ambassador to Indonesia; Mr. Gazali, Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Office and Mr. Khir, Minister of Education. Indonesian witnesses were Dr.Razif, Indonesian Ambassador to Malaya; Dr. Prijono Minister for Education and Culture; Madame Supeni, M.P., Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee and Mr. Sudjuno of the Foreign Ministry. This is the first friendship treaty signed by the two year old Malayan state and aims to create closer cultural and economic ties between the two states.

    The treaty was the climax of the Indonesian Prime Minister's five day state visit to Malaya. For the ceremony Dato Abdul Razak more traditional Malayan national dress while Dr. Djuanda preferred a western suit.

    The treaty, drafted in Indonesian, Malay and English, provides for the mutual easing of travel restrictions and the exchange of students, teachers, scientists and cultural mission. The exchange of the results of research into problems of the rubber and tin industries is also arranged.
