Background: Doctor Siaka Stevens was sworn in as Sierra Leone's first Executive President at a ceremony in Freetown on Wednesday 21 April. He told the gathering of politicians and diplomats at the ceremony that he would keep Sierra Leone in the Commonwealth and pursue a non-alignment policy. As Prime Minister, Dr Stevens declared his country a republic on Monday 19 April. Sierra Leone became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1961.
