Background: For the first time since the Formosa crisis - and his widely reported differences of opinion with America - Chinese Nationalist leader, President Chiang Kai-shek visited the American 7th Fleet, November 14.
Arriving by helicopter, he touched down on the carrier Midway, part of Task Force 77, the main unit of the 7th Fleet.
Accompanied by senior ranking Nationalist leaders, he inspected a guard of honour and watched launchings of supersonic jets capable of carrying nuclear bombs.
Task Force 77, built up to a total of six carriers, two cruisers and a number of destroyers and support vessels during mounting tension in mid-September, includes amongst its armoury F-104 Starfighter jets, believed to be the fastest manned jet fighters in use and equipped with air-to-air guided missiles.
