Background: The American Bicentennial Rodeo opened in Philadelphia on Saturday (26 June), marking the city's first outdoor rodeo in more than 20 years and providing a variety of colourful western pageantry.

SYNOPSIS: First on the programme was the grand parade, which featured many of the 270 competitors. They're top in their field in the Untied States and are competing for a purse of about $50,000. Rodeo is a unique American sport which has its roots in the post-Civil war era of the great cattle drives. Now it is a highly organised, professional sport.

One of the most exciting events for the millions of fans is bare-back bronx riding. The test for the cowboy is how well he rides and the horse it judged on its bucking performance.

Calf-roping is a race against time. Horse and rider must work together and the skill of the horse must match the ability of the cowboy if the calf is to be thrown and roped quickly.

Steer-wrestling, also known as bull-dogging, is another popular spectator sport. The cowboy leaps from a galloping horse onto the horns of a steer running at full speed. He must stop the steer and throw it to the ground.

The rodeo caps two days of activity throughout Philadelphia. There were numerous parades and several western heritage exhibitions were held. Rodeo guests include Buffalo Bill Cody's grandson, and world champion rodeo competitors.

A rodeo is colourful, exciting and dramatic. At times it is dangerous to competitors, and even professional cowboys are sometimes injured. But records show that the rodeo has fewer injuries than other sports like professional football. It's one of the few physical sports that doesn't pit man against man. In a rodeo it's man's skill versus an animals' natural speed or strength - well usually.
