"The day before the fighting was 20 miles from Saigon. On this morning it was 16 miles from the capital. Again the Viet Cong were able to disrupt traffic along a major highway to the north. The militia called in government reinforcements from the province capital of the zone. By the time they tracked to the scene, most of the shooting war was over. Farmers from the roadside village got out with a handful of belongings and their animals. The militia commander asked for artillery. The Viet Cong pulled back to the woods. There were no government casualties. The tactics were quite typical of old style guerrilla operations... interdict the road briefly, make people leave their homes, destroy confidence in the government's ability to protect. Scepticism about the militia already runs high. Although we had seen the Viet Cong, one family living not 300 yards away, refused to believe it was real. They said it was just the government staging an event for propaganda movie film. Bob Jones, NBC News on Highway 13."

Background: Fighting along Highway thirteen has moved closer to Saigon...it's now only 15 miles or so from the capital.

Reporters covering the fighting say the main objective of the Viet Cong forces seems to be to hit and run...to show the people in the area that government forces cannot protect them. Their attacks are also succeeding in disrupting traffic.
