Background: THE BRITISH MINISTER OF DEFENCE FOR THE ROYAL NAVY, LORD JELLICOE, NOW VISITING UNITS OF THE FAR EAST FLEET, ON AUGUST 11 TOURED THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE IN SINGAPORE, ACCOMPANIED BY VICE-ADMIRAL SIR DESMOND DREYER, COMMANDER OF THE FAR EAST FLEET.

EARLIER, LORD JELLICOE HAD DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CHIEF OF THE MALAYSIAN ARMED FORCES STAFF, LIEUTENANT GENERAL TENGKU OSMAN BIN TENGKU MOHAMED JEWA, IN KUALA LUMPUR BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE EAST COAST OF MALAYA TO WITNESS A FAR EAST-FLEET DEEP-SEA EXERCISE.

AT THE NAVAL BASE, LORD JELLICOE TALKED TO BRITISH OFFICERS OF A MARINE, TWO FRIGATES -- AJAX AND LINCOLN - AND THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER CENTAUR. THESE WARSHIPS WERE AMONG THE 30 SHIPS FROM AUSTRALIA, BRITAIN, NEW ZEALAND AND MALAYSIA INVOLVED IN THE DEEP-SEA EXERCISE.

HE SAID THAT MALAYSIA SHOULD BUILD UP HER NAVAL AND MILITARY DEFENCES IMMEDIATELY TO SAFEGUARD HER INTEGRITY AND NATIONAL FRONTIERS. BRITAIN IS DETERMINED TO HELP MALAYSIA'S DEFENCE REQUIREMENTS WITHIN THE LIMITS OF HER RESOURCES.

THE FAR EAST FLEET, HE ADDED, WOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO MEET ANY EVENTUALITIES THAT MIGHT ARISE IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD. HOWEVER, HE EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT INDONESIA CONFRONTATION WOULD BE SETTLED SHORTLY 'COMPATIBLE WITH THE INTEGRITY AND INDEPENDENCE OF MALAYSIA.'
