Background: English soccer champions Derby County scored a brilliant 4-1 win over the outstanding Spanish club Real Madrid in their second round European Cup tie in Derby, U.K., on Wednesday night (22 October).
Derby's victory was spear-headed by London soccer's former "bad boy" Charlie George.
George, who was given a high-priced transfer by his old club Arsenal earlier this year, slammed home three of Derby's goals. The other came from defender David Nish.
George was on target within ten minutes. He hit a cross on the half-volley in what has been described as the "goal of the year." Five minutes later, he again had the ball in the back of the net .. this time from the penalty spot.
He scored with another penalty in the second half after Nish had added his goal and Real had replied with a goal by Pirri.
Derby now go into the return match in Madrid, on November 5, with a three goal advantage.
