Background: THE AUSTRALIAN TROOP-CARRIER "SYDNEY" DROPPED ANCHOR IN VUNG TAU, 40 MILES SOUTH-EAST OF SAIGON, ON TUESDAY, TO DISEMBARK 450 AUSTRALIAN INFANTRYMEN AND EQUIPMENT. OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS, MORE THAN 300 AUSTRALIANS FROM AN 800-MAN COMBAT BATTALION HAVE ARRIVED IN SAIGON BY AIR FORCE SERVICE IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

ARMED AMERICAN HELICOPTERS CIRCLED THE AREA TO PROVIDE A COVER DURING UNLOADING OPERATIONS. THE SYDNEY WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A DESTROYER, FRIGATE AND AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER DURING HER 12-DAY SEA VOYAGE FROM AUSTRALIA.

THE TROOP-CARRIER WAS A SCENE OF BUSTLING ACTIVITY AS TRUCKS, JEEPS, ARMOURED PERSONNEL-CARRIERS AND OTHER VEHICLES WERE PREPARED TO BE LOWERED OVER THE SIDE FOR SHIPMENT TO THE SHORE. MORE THAN 500 TONS OF OTHER EQUIPMENT, STORES AND AMMUNITION WAS ALSO BEING PREPARED TO BE MOVED.

MOST OF THE EQUIPMENT WAS TO BE FLOWN FROM VUNG TAU TO THE STRATEGIC AMERICAN AIRBASE AT BIEN HOA, SOME 12 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON. THERE THE BATTALION WILL BE DEPLOYED IN DEFENSIVE POSITIONS TO PROTECT THE AREA FROM POSSIBLE VIETCONG ATTACKS. THE UNLOADING OF STORES AND EQUIPMENT WAS EXPECTED TO TAKE AT LEAST THREE OR FOUR DAYS.

THE TROOPS, IN BATTLE DRESS AND WEARING CAMOUFLAGED HELMETS, WERE FERRIED ASHORE IN WAVES OF VIETNAMESE LANDING CRAFT. LAND-ROVERS PAINTED A DARK JUNGLE GREEN AND LOADED WITH EQUIPMENT WERE THE FIRST ELEMENT OF THE BATTALION ASHORE.

(SIR ROBERT MENZIES, THE AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER, DECLARED IN WASHINGTON YESTERDAY THAT THE NEWLY ARRIVED AUSTRALIAN TROOPS IN VIETNAM WERE READY TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES. AND IN CANBERRA TODAY, THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MINISTER, SENATOR PALTRIDGE, SAID AUSTRALIAN TROOPS MAY BE USED TO SUPPORT VIETNAMESE FORCES UNDER ATTACK SHOULD THE MILITARY SITUATION REQUIRE IT.)
