Background: The United States' Chris Lloyd and Sweden's Bjorn Borg have won the singles titles in the French Open Tennis Tournament. It was Borg's fourth French title. He defeated Victor Pecci of Paraguay 6-3, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 on Sunday (10 June). Mrs. Lloyd returned to the Roland Garros Courts in Paris after a four-year absence. She dominated the women's competition, capturing her third French title on Saturday (9 June), beating Australia's Wendy Turnbull 6-2, 6-0.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs. Turnbull was in disappointing form for the final. She had not beaten Mrs. Lloyd in their least nine matches. And the twenty-six year old Australia only rarely looked as if she had a chance of beating Mrs. Lloyd.

The world's top-ranked player did not show her best form either. Only once, at two-one in the first set, did Turnbull take the lead over her American opponent.

After an hour, Mrs. Lloyd was serving for matchpoint. She had dictated the match from the baseline, deliberately engaging Mrs. Turnbull in long rallies, and time and time again the Australian lost patience and hit out. Mrs. Lloyd won 6-2, 6-0.

The men's final was played on Sunday (10 June) between the title holder Bjorn Borg and surprise finalist Victor Pecci of paraguay.

Pecci looked insecure in the first two sets. Borg won them easily 6-3, 6-1.

In a close third set, Pecci narrowly won the tie-breaker 7-6. But Borg's experience proved too much for the Paraguayan, who lost much of his concentration in the fourth set.

Matchpoint for Borg after three hours and thirty three minutes....
....He won the French Open Title in four sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
