SIR ROBERT PENROSE: "Those black eyes are so characteristic of him, everybody remarks on it."

JEAN FRASER: "It's the first thing I think you notice about him."

    SIR ROBERT: "Yes, yes."

JEAN FRASER: "They always have done, in fact there was a man who wouldn't let Picasso look at his valuable books because he used to say: I won't let you look at the books because your eyes will burn holes right through them."

Background: Painter Pablo Picasso has become the first painter, living or dead, to have his effigy displayed at Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London. The model wasn't made without difficulty. Picasso didn't want to pose for the sculptor, and the likeness had to be done from photographs. The temptation to make the effigy from a Picasso abstract self-portrait was resisted by sculptor Jean Fraser. She has sculptured a seated Picasso wearing plaid trousers and a V-neck sweater instead of shorts and sandals because they were felt to be more suited to the London climate.
