Background: A conference on Co-operative Fisheries, Surveying and Development opened on Sunday (16 July) in Doha with the aim of promoting harmony and co-operation between the Arabian Gulf countries.

The Conference was organised by two United Nations agencies--the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the U.N. Development Project (UNDP). During the three-day conference, representatives of the Arabian Gulf State will discuss ways and means of providing a pool of information and assistance for the mutual exploitation of fishery resources.

The Qatari Minister of Industry and Agriculture, Sheikh Faisal Bin Thani Al-Thani, opened the conference.

SYNOPSIS: In Qatar's Government House in Doha on Sunday, delegates from the Arabian Gulf States gathered for a conference designed to strengthen the ties between their countries. The Co-operative Fisheries Conference was called to encourage mutual co-operation in the exploitation of the large resources of fish found off the shores of the Arabian Gulf.

During the three-day conference, delegates will discuss ways and means of providing a central pool of information about the types and distribution of fish. They will also decide how best to equip their countries with specialised machinery, perhaps with the aid of United Nations agencies.

The Qatari Minister of Industry and Agriculture, Sheikh Faisal Bin Thani Al-Thani, opened the meeting. Delegates hoped that the conference would help to avoid disputes concerning territorial waters that currently mar relations between other fishing countries.
