Background: TRUCKS OF ZAMBIA-TANZANIA ROAD SERVICES (ZAM-TAN) HAVE BEGUN CARRYING COOPER FROM THE ZAMBIAN COPPER BELT TO THE TANZANIAN COAST AND BRINGING GENERAL GOODS TO ZAMBIA ON THE RETURN JOURNEY. LAST THURSDAY (6 MARCH), CONVOY OF LORRIES LEFT ZAM-TAN'S KITWE DEPOT FOR THE TRIP TO THE RHOKANA COPPER MINE FOR A CARGO OF COPPER WIREBARS.

TRUCKS ARRIVED AT THE KITWE DEPOT WITH A CARGO OF OIL FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM, IN TANZANIA. THE TANKERS BROUGHT IN HEAVY FURNACE OIL FOR THE OIL-FIRED FURNACE AT MUFULIRA, THE ONLY ONE IN ZAMBIA.

THE OIL AND OTHER GOODS WERE OFF-LOADED AND SOME OF THE TRUCKS THEN MOVED OUT AGAIN FOR THE TRIP TO THE RHOXANA MINES. OTHER VEHICLES WAITED AT KITWE FOR LOADS TO BE TAKEN DIRECTLY BACK ALONG THE 1,200-MILE (1,930 KMS) ROUTE TO DAR-ES-SALAAM.

AMONG THE TRUCKS GOING TO THE MINES WERE A NUMBER OF TANKERS. WHEN THE CONVOY REACHED THE RHOKANA MINES, COPPER WIREBARS WERE LOADED. THE WIREBARS WERE STRAPPED ONTO THE TANKERS FOR THE JOURNEY TO DAR-ES-SALAAM.

ZAM-TAN IS ABLE TO CARRY 13,000 TONS OF CARGO A MONTH BOTH WAYS, AND THE COMPANY HOPES TO BRING THE TOTAL UP TO 20,000 ??? MONTH BY THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR.

ZAM-TAN HAS A FLEET OF 450 TRUCKS AND A LABOUR FORCE OF 2,000 PEOPLE. THE COMPANY IS OWNED JOINTLY BY THE GOVERNMENTS OF ZAMBIA, TANZANIA AND ITALY. ITALY IS INVOLVED BECAUSE ALL THE TRUCKS MAKING UP ZAM-TAN'S FLEET ARE FIATS.

THERE ARE SIX-TAN STAGING POINTS, THREE IN ZAMBIA AND THREE IN TANZANIA, EQUIPPED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLES IF NECESSARY.

THE REGULATION TIME FOR THE TRIP IS SEVEN DAYS, INCLUDING A DAY'S REST AT THE BORDER STOP OF MBEYA, IN TANZANIA.
