    Background: LONDON, U.K.

Courage at sea was the theme of this year's Boat Show which opened at Earl's Court, London, on January 6 for 10 days. Centrepiece of the show was a large man-made pool. The courage theme was highlighted by two stands--one a salute to the British Task Force which recaptured the Falkland Islands from the Argentines last summer. Above it, a captured Argentine aircraft suspended from the ceiling. Another form of heroism at sea was illustrated by two tiny yachts which carried their skippers across the Atlantic to achieve fame in yachting history. The 2.30 metres (9ft 9ins) "Giltspur" won the record for the west-east crossing of the Atlantic in the smallest boat for its skipper, Tom McClean--only to lose it 17 days later in August last year when Bill Dunlop came ashore on the south-west coast of England in "Wind's Will", which at 2.08 metres (9ft 1in) is 20cms (8ins) shorter than "Giltspur". One of the fastest growing water sports in the world, sailboarding, was represented in a special section. Smallest boat in the show was a 1.49 metres (4ft 10 1/2ins) rowing boat. The largest boat in the show was a 14.84 metres (48ft 8ins) luxury motor yacht complete with a stereo receiver, and fridge/freezer and ice-maker.
