Background: The Syrian bear-cub - "Anthony" - born at London Zoo, UK, on New Year's Eve, made his first public appearance at the Zoo, March 8, when blanketed against the cold weather, he was weighed - tipped the scales at 110 lbs - then introduced to the admiring crowd.

It is the bear-cub's first outing away from his mother, "Winnie", who came from Iran and was presented to the Zoo in 1949. The father - "Pickles" - arrived in London from Persia in 1934 when only six months old.

Syrian bears are a light brown race of the Brown Bear and are found in scattered mountains districts from Asia Minor and Syrian Persia.

One individual not included in the bear-cub's list of admirers was a certain chimpanzee who showed his disapproval in no uncertain manner.
