WALDHEIM: "To sum up - I am making progress with my talks with the Cypriot leadership in order to her what their views are and to make them acquainted with my views on our problems as far as the United Nations activities are concerned. I hope that my visit will help them to understand that part of the situation, and to co-ordinate the efforts that are now underway to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. I thank you."

Background: United Nations Secretary-General Dr. Kurt waldheim arrived in Cyprus on Sunday (August 25). The following day he brought together the Island's rival leaders: Greek Cypriot Acting President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. It was the first time the two had met since the Geneva peace talks collapsed two weeks ago. After the meeting, Dr. Waldheim said that the talks "were held in a positive and constructive spirit."
But Mr. Denktash spoke in strongly challenging terms, warning that if Greek Cypriots started a guerrilla war, the Turks might try to seize control of the entire Island.

On his arrival at Nicosia, Dr. Waldheim made the following statement - which is found on our film:
