Background: INTRODUCTION: From a humble beginning just after World War Two, Britain's Rhine Army Summer Show has grown to the biggest army-run horse show in Germany. Held on the enormous, flat-grassed area of the Bad Lippspringe Sports Field, this year's show was held over the first weekend of June (6, 7 & 8 June).

SYNOPSIS: Some 50,000 people watched competitions, including 20 show jumping events, international polo matches and a horse-shoeing competition.

Bands on parade included the famous Royal Scots Dragon Guards.

Another milestone was reached this year with the 10th anniversary of 'Rodeo USA', Europe's only American rodeo.

Many soldiers and their families enter the competition as well as the local population. Most of the cowboys and cowgirls are American service personnel who have raised one million dollars for the welfare of U.S. forces in Europe.

It's the first rodeo to have women judges and competitors, a women announcer and its own Country and Western band. 'Rodeo USA' gives about 80 performances in 18 cities throughout Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and France each year.

Bronco riding, wild-horse team riding, trick roping, steer and calf roping all provide plenty of excitement.

For German and military families, the show provide a day in the open air, with plenty of attractions.

Not all the action was rough and dusty. There was a beauty contest, a German funfair with roundabouts and dodgem cars, and over 40 different stalls providing plenty to eat and drink.
