TRANSCRIPT: NORTHCOTT: "Near the end of the second round shavers caught Lyle with a left hook and Lyle went down for the first time in his professional career. "Getting knocked down isn't a big thing, "said Lyle, "its getting up that's important." Lyle did get up after an eight count and then the bell ended the round. Shavers handlers claim their man was victimised by a long count and they intend to appeal to the World Boxing Association. Shavers said the fight was stolen from him. Shavers people say Lyle got a minute of rest between the second and third round. Lyle dominated the rest of the fight he had Shavers against the ropes at the start of the sixth; a series of combinations put Shavers down; a right started him to the canvas and a left finished him. Lyle, who came into the fight with consecutive losses against Jimmy Young and Muhammad Ali, brought his record to thirty-one wins, three losses and a draw....with twenty-two knockouts. Shavers is forty-nine, five, one. Lyle now figures he has a shot at George Foreman or perhaps the winner of the Ali-Frazier fight.

Background: Ninth ranked World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight Ron Lyle was knocked down in the second round of his fight against Ernie Shavers in Denver on Saturday night (13 September) ... but got up to win by a knockout.

Shavers, who is ranked seventh in the WBA heavyweight ratings, has forty eight knockouts among his forty nine victories....and appeared to be headed for his forty-ninth knockout win when he dropped Lyle to the canvas in the second round with a classic left hook.

However, Lyle managed to get up before the official count of ten had been completed.

Shavers' handlers say they will appeal to the World Boxing Association because they claim that Lyle received an extra long count when he went down in the second round. They say it enabled him to recover and fight on.

After the second round, Lyle dominated the fight and by the sixth round he had Shavers up against the ropes when he put him down with a left to the head.
