    TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 4):

BEG: "As a lawyer I tell you this is very unfair. He didn't get a fair trial. 'Nor did he get a fair hearing in the Supreme Court. As a politician I tell you that this is going to further alienate the Moslems in Kashmir."

REPORTER: "Do you regard it as a political issue?"

BEG: "It is a political retaliation against what happened with electoral gains in mind."

    TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 6):

PATHAK: "I think it was a short meeting for ten minutes. Actually I had nothing to talk with him. I only communicated to him that his re-petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court. And we couldn't do anything for him."

    REPORTER: "What did he say?"

PATHAK: "He said that he feels this is all in retaliation for what had happened in Birmingham. And he said that he does not appreciate what happened in Birmingham."

REPORTER: "He was not happy with what happened in Birmingham?"

PATHAK: "Yes, this is what he told me."

REPORTER: "Was he calm or was he very upset?"

PATHAK: "He was calm, he was quiet, he was composed."

Background: Maqbool Butt, a founding leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was hanged in New Delhi on February 11. Butt's execution comes eight days after an extremist group in Britain, which kidnapped and killed an Indian diplomat, demanded his release. Security at New Delhi's Tihar jail was heavy, as officials feared possible violence. The secessionist leader had spent eight years on death row after being convicted of two murders. He was also accused of spying for Pakistan. Butt's lawyers, Muzzafar Beg and Romesh Pathak, were denied access to the prison and stood outside waiting with a host of journalists. Mr. Pathak, who had seen his client only the day before said Butt believed the hanging was carried out in retaliation for the kidnapping and murder of the Indian diplomat, Ravindra Mhatre. Meanwhile in Islamabad, official sources reported protest strikes following Butt's execution. His son, Javed, was among about thirty youths arrested by police for attempting a demonstration outside the Indian Embassy.
