Background: Jordanian troops were on the alert along the long Jordanian Valley border with Israel on Wednesday ( 26 August ).
The area was the scene of heavy fighting before the ceasefire and villages in the area lie deserted and shattered. The Jordanian Army is also keeping an intensive watch along the East Ghor Canal -- a waterway that provides irrigation for a substantial area of the country's agriculture. In the past, the irrigation canal has been a target of Israeli attacks and the Jordanians are taking no chances.
Farmers are allowed into the border area near the Sea of Galilee by day but they know that the region could become a military target again if the Middle-East ceasefire breaks-down.
In groves of trees and strategic positions units of the Jordanian Army keep their watch. The North Jordan area has been the scene of attacks on Israeli forces by Arab Commandos riding across the border in defiance of the ceasefire.
