Background: Israeli and Egyptian ministers held their first direct meeting on Sunday (29 October at the resumed peace negotiations in Washington. It was the first since the Israeli Cabinet revised their version of the draft treaty and included Israel's intention to increase the number of settlers on the occupied West Bank. The contentions issue prompted President Anwar Sadat of Egypt to threaten to withdraw his negotiators. However the whole matter was relegated to the background with the announcement that the Nobel Peace prize had been awarded to Mr. Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. At the weekend, the two exchanged greetings by telephone.
