Background: Guatemala City was awakened Nov 13 by the roar of fighter aircraft engines. They were searching for a group of officers who had just broken out of Matamoros Fort Prison, seized arms and ammunition, gathered together a group of about 100 sympathisers and fled towards Puerto Barrias. The Guatemalan port nearest Cuba.

Later the Government admitted officially that revolutionary outbreaks had occurred at Puerto Barrias and Zacapa, 220 and 95 miles respectively north-east of the capital.

The many and varied types of aircraft of the Guatemalan Air Force were readied at Aurora airfield, and took off to subject the rebel strongholds to 36-hours of continual aerial bombardment before the insurgents took to the hills. Latest reports say that Government troops have re-taken both Zacapa and Puerto Barrias.

Our cameraman in Zacapa was escorted by "rebel officials" to watch the dynamiting of the Marmol road bridge to prevent the advance of Government troops. He also witnessed an attack on the Zacapa Bridge by Guatemalan Air Force 'planes.

For some time there has been growing unrest in Guatemala against President Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes. He is accused of administrative corruption and police-state methods including attempts to silence the opposition press by intimidation.

President Eisenhower Nov 17 ordered the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier 'Shangri-la' and four destroyers to patrol inside Guatemalan and Nicaraguan waters, after both countries had appealed for help in preventing possible invasions by "Communist-directed elements". They accuse Cuba's Premier Castro of supporting rebels in Guatemala and Nicaragua.
