Background: As villagers of the Chalcidice Peninsula, Eastern Macedonia, prayed in their churches July 14, expecting the world to end at 14.45 hours, three powerful earthquake tremors destroyed hundreds of houses, and convinced many simple peasants that their expectations were about to be realised.

Twelve villages - including Krini, Marathussa and Kalamidio - lost 80 per cent of their buildings; hundreds of people were injured by falling debris, and thousands made homeless.

The belief that the world was about to end on July 14 swept across Europe. Perched on Mont. Blanc, Europe's highest mountain straddling the Franco-Italian frontier, 110 members of a religious sect wanted the cataclysm destined to knock the world off its axis.
