Background: THOUSAND OF NEGROES RIOTED IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN A NEW FLARE-UP OF RACIAL VIOLENCE AFTER WHITE SEGREGATIONISTS HURLED BOMBS AT A NEGRO MOTEL AND THE HOME OF A NEGRO BAPTIST MINISTER IN THE DEEP SOUTH CITY. NEARLY 50 PEOPLE WERE INJURED, SOME BY KNIVES, OTHERS BY BRICKS AND STONES.

THE RIOTING BEGAN AFTER NEGROES LEARNED OF THE BOMBING OF A MOTEL, A TYPE OF HOTEL, IN THE NEGRO SECTION OF BIRMINGHAM WHERE INTEGRATION LEADERS HAD ESTABLISHED HEADQUARTERS. TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED.

THEN IN ANOTHER NEARBY NEGRO COMMUNITY, THE HOME OF THE REV. A. D.KING BROTHER OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, THE INTEGRATIONIST LEADER, WAS BOMBED. KING'S WIFE AND CHILDREN WERE SLEEPING WHEN THE BOMB EXPLODED, BUT THEM WERE NOT HURT.

THE TWO INCIDENTS ENRAGED BIRMINGHAM NEGROES. THEY WENT ON A RAMPAGE. A POLICEMAN WAS STABBED IN THE BACK. ROCKS WERE THROWN AT POLICE CARS AND FIRE ENGINES. A NEGRO MINISTERS WITH A LOUD SPEAKER APPEALED FOR ORDER TO BE RESTORED, BUT TO NO AVAIL.

STORES AND HOUSES WERE SET ON FIRE. FIREMEN WERE HIT BY ROCKS AS THEY TRIED TO CONNECT THEIR HOSES. THEN ARMED STATE POLICE WERE CALLED IN, AND SEVERAL HUNDRED OF THEM HELD MUCH OF THE CITY UNDER VIRTUAL MARTIAL LAW.

(MEANWHILE, FEDERAL TROOPS HAVE ARRIVED AT BASES NEAR THE OUTSKIRTS OF BIRMINGHAM, READY TO MOVE IN, SHOULD PRESIDENT KENNEDY SO ORDER, TO PRESERVE ORDER. PRESIDENT KENNEDY DISCUSSED THE NEW FLARE-UP IN A TELEPHONE TALK WITH HIS BROTHER ROBERT, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, DURING THE WEEKEND, AND IS REPORTEDLY KEEPING IN TOUCH).
