Background: President Luis de Almeida Cabral of Guinea-Bissau held talks with East German leader Erich Honecker in East Berlin on Monday (26 June). The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between East Germany and Guinea-Bissau.
SYNOPSIS: President Luis Cabral of Guinea-Bissau met with the East German Head of State, Herr Erich Honecker, in East Berlin last week,. The meeting took place during a private visit to East Germany by President Cabral, who has been Guinea-Bissau's Head of State since it won independence from Portugal nearly five years ago.
According to the East German Communist Party newspaper, Neues Deutchland, the two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between Guinea-Bissau and East Germany. The Heads of State also expressed their common support for black guerrilla movements fighting in Southern Africa, the newspaper added. East Germany has given considerable aid to Africa and currently is said to have several thousand advisors in Zambia training Patriotic Front members opposed to the current regime in Zimbabwe Rhodesia.
