Background: Screaming, rioting teenagers stormed into West Berlin's Sports Palace, chased curtain-raising musicians off the stage and demanded the immediate appearance of America's Rock'n' Roll King Bill Haley; due to appear later in the show, October 26.

Haley, rushed from his hotel, managed to keep his audience under control during a 40-minute rock session. But the session's end signalled the start of one of West Berlin's biggest "Halbstarko" (halfstrong or Teddy Boy) riot to date.

In a full-scale wrecking session they caused GBP2,500-worth of damage. Truncheon-wielding police fought their way into the 8,000 mob (normal capacity is 6,000), finally quelled the riot by using fire hoses.

Hospital casualty roll totalled 50.

Said Haley: "What I have heard here is a shame. There has never been anything like this in the U.S."
