Background: President Mobutu of Zaire (formerly Congo Democratic Republic) rode a camel beside the Pyramids and visited the Sphynx at the Giza Plateau just outside Cairo on Sunday (7 November).

The President was one of the four African Heads of State relaxing after intensive talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat trying to gauge the possibilities of settlement in the Middle East crisis.

Along with President Leopold Senghor of Senegal, President Ahmadou Ahidjo of Cameroun, and Nigeria's General Yakubu Gowon, the Zaire leader is a delegate of a mission elected by the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.). The mission, which last week hold working sessions with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem, wound up its Middle East visit on Monday (8 November).

SYNOPSIS: Riding a camel towards the Giza pyramids on Sunday--Zaire President Joseph Mobutu. For the President and three other African Heads of State in nearby Cairo it was a relaxing break from their talks on the Middle East crisis.

But President Mobutu was the only African mission member out to see the sights of Ancient Egypt. Senegal's President Leopold Senghor, President Ahmadou Ahidjo of Cameroun and General Yakubu Gowon of Nigeria stayed in their hotel rooms. The Zaire leader was shown around by the Director of the Cairo Museum.

His next stop--the Great Sphynx.

This mission was delegated by the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.) to root out the possibilities of a settlement in the Middle East dispute. The African leaders had held working session with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem before flying to Cairo. Here they had intensive talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. They later were reportedly "very satisfied" with the frank manner of the discussions. On Monday they were due to fly on to Dakar to report their findings to the O.A.U.
