Background: Voting in the Kenya general election continued Feb 23 as the electorate in Nairobi South - consisting mainly of Europeans - went to the polling booths to vote for the candidate of their choice. It was said to be the first time that Europeans and Africans had voted together.

Polling throughout the country - quiet and orderly from the start -was to continue until Feb 26. Results were expected to be announced March 1.

The elections - to provide an African majority in the Legislative Council for the first time - are the first move in the quickened speed towards African independence decreed by Mr Macleod, the Colonial Secretary, after last year's Kenya conference.

Mr Tom Mboya launched a bitter attack on the country's Minister of Commerce and Industry Feb 23. He told 10,000 cheering supporters in Nairobi that Dr Kiano "holds Ministry in a Government which is still restricting Jomo Kenyatta".

Later, Mr Mboya accused Dr Kiano of being the power behind the scenes in the election campaign of Mr Mboya's biggest rival for a seat in Nairobi East constituency.
