Background: President Ahmed Sekou Tour of Guinea has officially taken office for his third consecutive term in proclamation ceremonies held in the capital city of Conakry. The ceremonies preceded the opening of the West African republic's new Legislative Assembly.

Mr Sekou Toure, who has been his country's only President since it gained independence from France in 1958, was elected to a new, seven-year term in national elections held late last December. He was the only presidential candidate, and no votes were cast against him. In the same elections, 150 members of Mr. Sekou Toure's Guinean Democratic Party -- the country's sole political party -- were elected to the National Assembly for five year term.

The President was joined in the proclamation ceremonies at Conakry's Stadium of the 28th of September -- named for the date in 1958 when a Guinean referendum rejected the de Gaulle constitution -- by three other West African political leaders. They were President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania, Colonel Moussa Traore, Chief of State of Mali, and Guinea-Bissau leader Aristides Pereira. Also present was Madame William Tolbert, wife of the Liberian President.
