Background: On Saturday (22 July) a mass celebration and memorial was held in Sudan's capital to mark the first anniversary of President Jaafar El Nimeiry's return to power after a three-day abortive coup d'etat.
President Nimeiry led a parade with his Chiefs of Staff, while thousands of Sudanese citizens cheered and applauded. The march through Khartoum ended at the tomb of the officers and men killed in the coup while supporting President Nimeiry.
Wreaths were laid at the tomb by President Nimeiry and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Riad. Other foreign dignitaries representing the People's Republic of China, France and the Arab States watched the ceremony.
