Background: From the top of the 3,000-metre (yard) Djebel Ros mountain in the Golan Heights, Israeli soldiers and border police yesterday (Monday) kept armed watch over the whole area below, which, which they call "Fatahland".

The gun emplacements on Djebel Ros were built in the last six months--after guerrilla shellings from the area devastated the town of Kiryat Shmona in Upper Galilee. The hill n which they are placed is on a triangle--western part in Lebanon, eastern in Syria, and southern in Israel.

One of the jobs of the military patrols is to give armed protection to the bulldozers and cranes working on road building and maintenance in the area.

These roads are vital to the Israeli forces which the guard the area--enabling them to move heavy armour and fortifications for action against in the guerrillas which have been driven back from the Golan Height into the Irbid district of Jordan or Lebanon.
