Background: Arsenal, currently the only club within striking distance of Leeds United at the top of the English First Division, today (Saturday) kept up the pressure with a convincing 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal--European Fairs Cup holders and the most successful London club this season--took command from the start, and the Wolves goalkeeper Parkes was soon being tested by dangerous shots.

After 22 minutes, Arsenal took a well-deserved lead. A chip from Storey was cooly brought under control by George Graham, who steered the ball wide of Parkes into the far corner of the net.

Wolves relied largely on the long ball--trying to float centres onto the heads of their front-runners, Gould, Curran and Wagstaffe.

The second half was less than a minute old when Arsenal scored again, Armstrong corner was headed on the Sammels, and John Radford raced in to hook the ball into the net.

This forced Wolves out of defence and into attack. The pulled back a goal after 65 minutes. Derek Dougan headed in a free kick by Wagstaffe. But Arsenal ended the game firmly in control and were unlucky not to go further ahead.
