Background: Vast sections of Rumania are still underwater nearly a month after the first flooding of the Danube River. Officials reports from Rumania say the floods have done more damage to the country than the Second World War.

There has been extensive damage in the cities of Braila, Galati and Tulcea, north-east of Bucharest, where thousands of acres of farmland are underwater and people are struggling to rebuild after the worst natural disaster in their history.

Experts say the flood waters have probably reached their peak and that they should begin to recede if there is no more rain in the next days.

Government officials say it is still not possible to place a precise monetary value on the total damage but in agriculture alone it is estimated at more than GBP11 million sterling. Nearly 300,000 people have had to be evacuated and more than 200 have died, Other official estimates show that 38.701 houses have been destroyed or damaged and that 34,000 animals have died.
