Background: After winning the toss and going into bat, England finished the first day, June 8, of the first test against the Australians, at Edgbaston, with 180-runs on the board for 8-wickets. The only Englishman to pass 50 was opener Subba Row, who played a fine innings that produced 59-runs. The next highest score came from Barrington who knocked up 21.

A combination of a pitch made awkward by showers and the accurate medium pace bowling of Ken Mackay tumbled the English wickets. Rain stopped the match several times throughout the day and altogether cost an hour and 35-minutes playing time. Each time the Australians returned to the field they were given more help from the enlivened wicket.

When the English pair Pullar and Subba Row opened the innings they seemed in no danger from the Australian attack of Davidson and Misson. They took the score to 10, before a shower sent them off. When the game continued the score moved on to 36, before Davidson took Pullar's leg stump with a late in-swinger. Until then Pullar had collected 17 safe runs.

Dexter lasted for 18-minutes against the nagging length of Mackay, who had replaced Misson, until he gave Davidson an easy catch, with his score on 10. With England on 53 for 2, captain Colin Cowdrey came to the wicket and stayed until lunch. More rain extended the lunch interval by five minutes.

Subba Row did most of the scoring when play restarted. Cowdrey played several good shots and had reached 13, when Misson forced him to play back on to his stumps. He made 13, and pushed the runs on to 88 for 3. Barrington joined Row and they stayed until rain brought the tea forward.

With ten over both batsmen gave a few chances until Barrington was caught by Misson off Mackay, at what proved to be the start of the England slump. Smith nicked his second ball onto his pads and into the hands of Lawry, off Mackay. Smith had failed to score and England were 121 for 5.
