Background: THE WORLD'S TOP RALLY DRIVERS LEFT NAIROBI, KENYA, YESTERDAY (3 APRIL) AT THE START OF THE GRUELLING 3,000-MILE (4,800 KM) EAST AFRICAN SAFARI. SIGNAL TO GO CAME FROM PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA, WHO DROPPED HIS FLY-WHISK TO START THE FIRST TEN CARS AT TWO MINUTE INTERVALS.

THE COURSE, WHICH WINDS INTO THE STEEP MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN UGANDA AND BACK TO THE KENYAN COAST, IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE TOUGHEST IN THE WORLD. AND IN ITS 16-YEAR HISTORY THE RALLY HAS ALWAYS BEEN WON BY A LOCAL DRIVER.

FINNISH DRIVING ACE SIMO LAMPINEN, DRIVING A SAAB V4, WAS A FAVOURITE TO BE THE FIRST FOREIGN VICTOR, BUT WAS FORCED TO RETIRE ONLY 54 MILES OUT OF NAIROBI WHEN HIS CAR BROKE DOWN WITH FLYWHEEL TROUBLE.

AT THAT STAGE CAR NUMBER 4, THE JAPANESE DATSUN OF JACK SIMONIAN AND PAT NEYLAN WAS LEADING WITH A LOSS OF 24 POINTS. BUT LATER THEY LOST OVER THREE HOURS WHEN THEIR CAR HIT A BANK AND CRUMPLED A WING. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED IN SOUTH WEST UGANDA, IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE LEGENDARY MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON.

BRITISH WOMEN PAT MOSS-CARLSSON AND SUSAN SEIGLE MORRIS IN A LANCIA FULVIA (CAR NUMBER 5) WERE AMONG THE FIRST HALF-DOZEN OVERSEAS COMPETITORS. FINN RAUMO AALTONEN, WITH HENRY LIDDON, ALSO IN A LANCIA (CAR NUMBER 9) WAS AMONG THE LEADERS.

AS THE CARS REACHED KABWOHE IN SOUTH WESTERN UGANDA TODAY (4 APRIL) CAR NUMBER 19, THE FORD LOTUS CORTINA OF VIC PRESTON AND ROBERT GERRISH, ANOTHER KENYAN ENTRY, HAD TAKEN THE LEAD WITH A LOSS OF 71 POINTS.

ALSO ON FILM ARE CAR 2: FORD 20M (BENGT SODERSTROM AND GUNNAR PALM); CAR 29: DATSUN (JOHN SAUNDERS AND HUGH PEATLING); CAR 30: PEUGEOT (BASHIR ALI AND JEREMY WOODS); CAR 41: FORD CORTINA GT (I.V.
