Background: General George Grivas, former EOKA leader in Cyprus, visited Trikalla in the Thessaly district of central Greece May 8, and was accorded a very enthusiastic reception. As he stepped from his car, the crowd gathered him up and carried him shoulder high to the town square where he made a speech attacking the Government.
The General, leader of the Movement of National Recreation - a combination of four political parties - once again attacked the Karamanlis Government for what he termed "a destructive and anti-national policy". He told the crowd that very soon the people of Greece would be called upon "to relieve the country form the unscrupulous leaders of the present Government." He accused the Government of spending State money to create unnecessary luxurious buildings while the majority of the rural population faces starvation.
As he spoke the crowd cheered his every attack and waved banners bearing slogans such as "Down with the Oligarchy" - "Down with the Government" - "We want national purification" - and "Grivas save us".
Until the prophesied elections, the M.N.R. - consisting of the Liberals, National Union of Progressive Centre, Popular Social Party, and the Labour Agrarian Party - have a Parliamentary representation of 34 deputies.
