INTRODUCTION: In Paris, thousands of Jews have demonstrated against the recent meeting between the French Foreign Minister, Claude Cheysson and the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Yasser Arafat. They are particularly angry that the meeting took place less than a day after Saturday's (29 August) attack on a synagogue in Vienna which left two people dead. Israel has blamed the attack on the PLO.
SYNOPSIS: The demonstration was held outside a synagogue which had itself been the subject of a bomb attack last October. That bombing resulted in four deaths and a wave of attacks on Jewish communities in France.
Today, the French government was the subject of the crowd's anger. It was aroused by M. Cheysson's statement at the weekend likening the Palestinian struggle against Israel with that of France against the Nazis in World War Two.
Posters accused M. Cheysson of supporting PLO murderers and the government of propping up bloody dictators in the Middle East by selling them arms.
Their anger has been echoed by Israel. Today (2 September) Israel's ambassador to France delivered a sharp protest to President Mitterrand saying M. Cheysson's comments were a blow to Middle East peace and would encourage extremist violence. This came only a day after France signed a new pact with Jordan guaranteeing future military co-operation.
