Background: The biggest tanker ever built in France, the 240,000 ton "Blois" was named at La Ciotat, near Marseilles yesterday (Friday).

The tanker, also believed to be one of the biggest ever constructed in Europe, will enter service with the British Petroleum company as the largest crude oil tanker in their fleet.

The company hopes to have more than 45 ships in the over 200,000 ton class in operation by the end of 1975.

The naming ceremony was performed by Madame Chenevier, wife of the Chairman of the B.P. operation in France.

The tanker is fitted with modern navigational and operating equipment. the service speed of the "Blois" is planned to be 16 knots.
