Background: PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA SAID YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN ZAMBIA THAT HIS COUNTRY DID NOT INTEND TO NATIONALISE ITS COPPER INDUSTRY BUT WOULD EXERCISE SOME CONTROL OVER ITS PROFITS. DR. KAUNDA TOLD A CROWD OF SEVERAL THOUSANDS GATHERED FOR THE UNVEILING OF A PLAQUE COMMEMORATING HEROES OF THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE THAT ZAMBIA WANTED NEITHER WESTERN CAPITALISM NOR COMMUNISM - THE NATION WAS COMMITTED TO ITS OWN IDEOLOGY OF HUMANISM. THE RALLY WAS THE FIRST TIME ZAMBIA HAD RECOGNISED MAY DAY.

THE ULTIMATE AIM IN HIS ECONOMIC REVOLUTION, SAID PRESIDENT KAUNDA, WOULD BE FOR ALL OTHER INDUSTRY TO BE RUN ON A COOPERATIVE BASIS, A SO-CALLED 'PEOPLE'S CAPITALISM'. ADDRESSING THE 5,000 MEMBERS OF THE EXPATRIATE COPPERMINERS' SOCIETY THROUGH THE HALF DOZEN WHO ATTENDED THE RALLY, DR KAUNDA SAID THAT WHITES WOULD CONTINUE TO BE WELCOME AS WORKERS IN ZAMBIA PROVIDING THEY ACCEPTED THE SAME CONDITIONS AS ZAMBIANS.
