TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: INTERPRETER TRANSLATING ALLENDE: "I don't see why there should exist any fear of investing in Chile, when we have said very clearly that the programme of Popular Unity establishes the (indistinct) which must be imperative in the country. Cooper is the floor of the Chilean economy. Now I would ask the average U.S. man, would the united States accept a foreigner to say own the oil in Texas? I don't believe so. Cooper means 83 per cent of the foreign exchange earned by my country, and more than 25 per cent of the fiscal budget. This is way we discriminate between investments in wealth, in monopolies, and basically in natural wealth, natural riches which are decisive, which are basic, for the salvation of the country. But those who wish to come and invest in industries which do to determine, or wrist, or deform our economy furthermore, we clearly recognise that these investments are needed by us, just as we also need the technology".

Background: President Salvador Allende, about to complete his first year as Marxist President of Chile, gave a wide-ranging interview on Sunday (31 October) on United States television. He was interviewed on the National Broadcasting Company programme "Meet the Press", with the questions coming from washington and the answers via satellite from Santiago. Viewers in the U.S. saw the Chilean President in black and white only.

President Allende was interviewed only days after a special tribunal in Santiago began hearings on objections by giant U.S. copper companies to Chile's no-compensation take-over of their assets.

The President stood firmly on his Government's decision to nationalise Chilean copper, but stressed that U.S. investment in other fields was still welcome.

A profile of Presidents Allende, to mark his first year in office, has been syndicated as Visnews Production No. 12873/71.
