Background: SCIENTIFIC GADGETS, ULTRA-MODERN WEAPONS FOR CROWD CONTROL, AND POLICE INNOVATIONS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WERE ON SHOW AT THE 16-DAY EXHIBITION OF POLICE TECHNIQUES AND EQUIPMENT WHICH OPENED IN HANOVER, WEST GERMANY, TODAY (SATURDAY).

THERE WERE FROGMAN OUTFITS AND ARMOURED PATROL VEHICLES AS WELL AS MORE MUNDANE EQUIPMENT LIKE PORTABLE HALT SIGNS FOR CONTROLLING TRAFFIC.

THE EXHIBITION WAS BEING ATTENDED BY MORE THAN TEN THOUSAND POLICE - SOME 2,000 OF THEM FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

WEST GERMAN INTERIOR MINISTER OTTO BENNEMANN, WHO OPENED THE EXHIBITION, STRESSED THE FACT THAT ALTHOUGH POLICE WORK WAS BOUND TO BECOME MORE TECHNICAL - "THIS CANNOT REPLACE THE RESPONSIBILITY AND GOOD SENSE OF THE ORDINARY POLICEMAN".

POLICE OFFICERS FROM COUNTRIES LIKE CHILE AND AFGHANISTAN RUBBED SHOULDERS WITH CANADIAN MOUNTIES AND FRENCH GENDARMES AS THE EXHIBITION OPENED IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLINESS.
