SCU INTERIOR Army spokesman describes kidnapping in English.
NATO SPOKESMAN: "I am Lieutenant-Colonel Chettio, Land South, Public Information Officer. The kidnapped General of the United States Army, James Dozier, born in (INDISTINCT), Florida, on 1 April, 1931, and serving with the quarter Land South in Verona, Italy, since 30 June, 1980, as Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, and Administrator, was kidnapped in his home at 1730 yesterday, 17 December. Four men, armed and disguised as plumbers, entered his home, and after they had struck the General, immobilised his wife with chains and a packing case, took off with the hostage after locking him up in a trunk. Before leaving, the abductors searched the apartment located (INDISTINCT). The alarm was given at ten past twenty-one, when Mrs Dozier succeeded by banging on the floor and the wall to attract the attention of the neighbours. Responsibility for the abduction was taken by the Red Brigades with a phone call to the Answer-Wise Service in Milan at 2335, yesterday night."

Background: INTRODUCTION: A United States Army General was kidnapped on Thursday (17 December) from his home in the Italian town of Verona. The Red Brigades guerilla group has claimed responsibility. Brigadier-General James Dozier is a senior officer at NATO's Allied Land Forces Southern Europe Headquarters, which are based in Verona. His kidnappers, posing as plumbers, seized him from his flat and left his wife tied up, unable to reach help for several hours.
SYNOPSIS: After lying low for months, the Red Brigades have emerged with the most audacious political kidnapping since that of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro, in 1978. An anonymous telephone caller told the Milan office of an Italian news agency the Red Brigades had carried out the crime.
General Dozier was taken from his suburban apartment in a metal trunk and driven away in a van. First news of the kidnapping broke when his wife managed to free herself after four hours, and contacted local police.
Verona is the centre for NATO's Land Force in Southern Europe, and heavily-armed anti-terrorist police immediately threw up road blocks around the city. Security precautions were tightened around high-ranking NATO officers throughout Europe. This kidnapping comes three months after the assassination attempt in West Germany on the Commander of US Army Forces in Europe. A NATO army spokesman described it this way...
