Background: Israeli yesterday (Tuesday) launched one of its biggest air and ground attacks since the Six Day War of 1967. Under cover of blanket air-strikes by Mirage and Skyhawk jets, a large tank force crossed into South Lebanon in a search-and-destroy mission against Palestinian guerilla bases.
Lebanese tanks and artillery counter-attacked. Syrian and Jordanian forces also opened fire against the Israeli force -- estimated by the Lebanese to comprise 100 tanks and 2,000 men. A large-scale artillery duel developed between the two sides.
The Israeli's claimed to have rounded up terrorist suspects from six villages. And while the fighting raged, the usual groups of refugees were seen fleeing from the battle area.
