Premier Zhao Ziyang of China met Mr. Sam Nujoma in Beijing on January 27 to discuss a request for military aid. Mr. Nujoma, who is head of Namibia's South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO), also met other senior Chinese officials. He requested assistance for his guerrilla forces in their struggle against South African troops. After talks, he said the Chinese leader was committed to giving arms, ammunition and welfare aid to Namibia. But he declined to comment on the specific types of military aid promised by China. This was Mr. Nujoma's sixth visit to Beijing in recent years and followed a meeting Mr. Zhao had with senior SWAPO officials on his African tour in December 1982. Relations between the two countries had been low-key until recently and SWAPO received most of its arms aid from the Soviet bloc. After Mr Nujoma's visit, the New China News Agency quoted Mr. Zhao as saying that his country not only supported Namibia politically and normally, but provided as much material assistance as possible.
