Background: At Lake Placid, in the United States....the site of the next Winter Olympics, international competitions have already been staged on some of the newly built Olympic courses. And they'll be trying out the ninety metres ski-jump and bobsled run later this month.

SYNOPSIS: Lake Placid is high in the Adironack Mountains of New York state. It has hosted the Olympic before...in 1932.

Those were the days when Olympic Games were strictly int he amateur league -- but now the Games mean big money -- one hundred and fifty million dollars will have been spent staging the extravaganza by March next year.

In 1931 they spent less than six months building this Olympic arena and one of the olympic arena and one of the Olympic stars who used it was Sonja Henie the Norwegian champion.

A new arena to seat eight thousand has been built for the 1980 skating events.

Lake Placid's two and a half thousand population will be swelled enormously from late January 1980, as winter sports fans from all over the world arrive. but the athletes and coaches won't stay here. A special Olympic village is being built eleven kilometres (nearly seven miles) away.

Lake Placid residents have been promised they'll pay no new local taxes to finance the Olympics -- but in the past few months money problems have developed.

The administrative budget climbed to fifty-nine million dollars. A new general manager of the Olympic Organising Committee cut that back to fifty million dollars, but figures show that's still about eight million dollars more than expected income. For their part the United States government and the state of New York have sunk a combined Seventy-seven million dollars into the Games.

Some of that money has been spent developing the Whiteface Mountain about fifteen kilometres (about nine miles) from Lake Placid for the Alpine events. By next year it will have nine chair lifts and twenty-eight ski-trails. And if snow falls aren't perfect there's a machine which can cover half of the mountain in man-made snow.

The Olympic village is being built to cater for twelve hundred athletes and about six hundred coaches and officials. In effect the Olympic Committee are building a small town for twenty million dollars. It won't be wasted after the athletes have gone. It will be turned into a sophisticated re-training prison.

The Winter Olympics start on the thirteenth of February next year and will run for eleven days. The best winter sport money can buy -- at just one hundred and fifty million dollars.
