Background: Meeting in Paris, finance ministers from a number of leading industrial nations agreed on January 17 to make more than 18 billion U.S. dollars in credit available to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The credit is designed to ease the crippling debts by the world's poorer nations and ease strains on the international financial system. The exact size of the loan was a compromise with the United States opposing moves for a larger sum of 22 billion U.S. dollars. The British delegation was led by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Geoffrey Howe. The present members of the Group of Ten are the United States, West Germany, Britain, France, italy, Japan, Canada, The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, with Switzerland as an observer.
